The federal government announced today it will provide $20.3 million for repair and improvement projects at small craft harbours in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
Senator Fabian Manning made the announcement on behalf of Fisheries Minister Gail Shea.
"The commercial fishers of Newfoundland and Labrador depend on a safe and accessible system of small craft harbours to make a living," Manning said. "Our government's investments in these harbours are vital to the economy and livelihood of coastal communities and this investment will enable commercial fish harvesters to rely on that system for years to come."
Across Canada, the Small Craft Harbours Program is investing $67 million to revitalize small craft harbours and support the livelihood of those Canadians who depend on them. Safety and operational efficiency at harbours across the country will be improved through a variety of projects including dredging, wharf repairs, electrical system updates, and general maintenance.
