Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, has arrived in St. John's to begin a weekend visit to the city.

The Canadian Forces Challenger jet arrived at St. John's International Airport at 2:25 p.m. where Princess Anne was greeted by more than a dozen officials including Lt.-Gov. John Crosbie and Lt. Col. Alex Brennan, commander of the first battalion of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.

Princess Anne was presented with flowers and after briefly chatting with members of the receiving line, she boarded a waiting vehicle and left the airport in a convoy of four black vehicles.

There was a heavy presence of security on hand for the arrival.

Princess Anne's first event in the city takes place at 4:30 p.m. when the princess will receive an honourary degree from Memorial University, to be followed at 6:30 p.m. at the Delta St. John's Hotel where she will present Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards during a ceremony at Delta St. John's Hotel to 150 recipients.

Her visit continues Saturday and Sunday.
