Students and members of the public who want to learn about the First World War activities of the Royal Newfoundland regiment now have a new tool.
A new website (www.therooms.ca/regiment) was launched today during a ceremony at The Rooms in St. John's.
It provides the most comprehensive and accurate database ever made available on the regiment, which took part in numerous battles in the war and suffered terrible losses at places such as Beaumont Hamel and Monchy-le-Preux.
The site was made possible through a partnership between the provincial government and The Rooms Corporation.'
It was developed for Grade 8 history students, and is accessible to the public.
The database currently contains the personal files of over 2,200 soldiers from The Rooms Provincial Archives, including all 1,305 men from this province who died in the war and all soldiers who received commendations.
There are plans to include the files of all 5,391 soldiers from the regiment who fought in the war.
There are also many other features, including interactive maps, the history of various battles, and hundreds of images of artifacts.
There is also archival video footage, newspaper articles and photos of soldiers.
The regiment's complete war diary, from September 1, 1915 to March 31, 1919 is also available.
Lt.-Col. Alex Brennan, commander of regiment's 1st battalion in St. John's, called the website a masterpiece.
