Dr. Antony Card has been appointed director of Memorial's School of Human Kinetics and Recreation (HKR), effective June 1.
Memorial's Board of Regents approved the appointment at its May meeting.
Card has been acting director at the school since July 2009 when Dr. Mary Bluechardt stepped down. Before that, he served as associate director for over a year and has been teaching at the school since 2002. Card started in HKR in 2002 as an assistant professor. Since July 2009 he has been acting director for the school.
Card points to the school's climbing enrolment during the past five years as an indication of the potential of a career in the field of Human Kinetics and Recreation.
"That means more faculty to teach those students, increasing our research capacity, expanding our excellent co-operative opportunities and making more connections with the community," he said. "I want to enable students, faculty and staff to realize their aspirations and I want our graduates to be cutting-edge leaders in their field. Yes, you could say I have big dreams for the school."
