Metrobus is supporting the Retire Your Ride program in Newfoundland and Labrador.
According to a news release, Metrobus has been a partner of Retire Your Ride since the program's inception in 2009 and, most recently, Metrobus is circulating a "Superbus" which vibrantly displays Retire Your Ride information.
"Because Retire Your Ride and Metrobus share an interest in protecting the environment, partnering together was a logical move for both organizations," says Amanda Kinsman, vehicle recycling co-ordinator for Newfoundland and Labrador. "We're thrilled to offer program participants a free one-year Metrobus pass in exchange for a pre-1996 vehicle."
Retire Your Ride is a national program that offers rewards to Canadians who recycle their vehicles in eco-friendly ways. One reward choice is a one-year Metrobus pass but there are other reward options as well. For example, program participants might accept cash or a rebate on a newer vehicle. Anyone interested in the program can contact 1-877-773-1996 or visit www.retireyourride.ca.

Whatever your take on the validity of this deal the color scheme sure beats that gawd awful green adorning the main fleet. It's enough to make you lose your breakfast as one approaches the bus stop.

The carbon footprint of producing a new vehicle is much greater than maintaining an older vehicle. These programs to destroy working vehicles are just PR programs. Give people help to make their old cars run efficiently amnd they can obtain as good as or better consumption than new vehicles without the additional mining, transporting, processing, transporting, manufacturing on five continents, transporting, assembly, painting, and delivery that a new vehicle requires. Older cars don't have as much electronics, which is extremely toxic to the enviroment.

That's great Metrobus, but when are YOU going to retire some of those pre-1996 buses?? For those who aren't aware,on each Metrobus there is a 4-digit number. The first 2 digits are the year the vehicle was made.Example,9258 means the bus is a 1992 model.I was behind this bus the other day and nearly choked on the fumes. By the way,Im willing to bet your 1996 car will get you where you are going a lot faster than Metrobus can.At least they were smart enough to use a newer bus for the advertising.
