Ground crews, boats and a helicopter continued searching a fast-moving Labrador river today for the bodies of three young boaters who were swept over a waterfall earlier this week.
The RCMP conceded that any hope of finding the three teenagers alive had ended.
"It will be fair to say that this has moved into the recovery stage at this point," said Sgt. Guy Caines. "The only thing we can hope for is we can recover the bodies and get some closure for the families."
The three men, believed to be in their late teens, were paddling a canoe-like boat on the Churchill River on Tuesday evening when the they neared Muskrat Falls.
The men abandoned their boat in an effort to save themselves but were swept over the 15-metre falls.
Caines said a piece of the boat and a running shoe belonging to one of the men were found on the river Wednesday.
He said high water levels and a strong current were continuing to hamper search efforts.
Caines said officials were staying in contact with the families of the missing boaters.
"It's very hard for them - a very hard time - but we're helping by providing whatever they need at this point."
