The province has appointed new committee members to fill vacancies on the Eastern and Western Regional Waste Management Committees.
"The committees' work to advance the modernization of solid waste management for the eastern and western regions supports our government's commitment to environmentally responsible, secure waste disposal services for our province," Municipal Affairs Minister Dianne Whalen said in a statement.
"I am confident that those newly appointed will join current members and help make decisions in the best interests of the regions."
Four individuals have been appointed to the Eastern Regional Waste Management Committee: Faith Roberts, Town of Brigus; Bill Bailey, Town of Clarenville; and Debbie Hanlon and Danny Breen, City of St. John's. The committee is comprised of 16 members.
Eight individuals will join the 12-member Western Regional Waste Management Committee. New committee members are Richard Farrell, Town of Channel-Port aux Basques, Walter Nicolle, Town of Rocky Harbour; Joan Parsons, Town of Hampden; Shelia Mercer, Town of Deer Lake; Newton Pritchett, Town of Gilliams; John Parsons, Town of Lark Harbour; and Linda Chaisson and Donna Luther, City of Corner Brook.
The appointments are effective immediately.
The province aims to reduce the number of waste disposal sites by 80 per cent, and the amount of waste going into landfills by 50 per cent. Full implementation of the plan is expected by 2020.

Where is the mayor of CBS in all this? Lord knows he's on municipal committees from coast to coast. The reasons and any benefits to CBS are unclear but I would think charity begins at home.

Instead of having a number of dumpsites now we will have the roads clogged with trucks transporting garbage all over creation. WOW what a smart bunch of people. There is nothing like an elected official for stupid.
