Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) together with HMCS Toronto, are due to arrive in St. John's Friday at 8 a.m. and depart the city Monday.
SNMG1 consists of four ships: HDMS Absalon (flagship), FGS Karlsruhe, USS Boon and FGS Spessart. The fleet will be joined by the Canadian frigate HMCS Toronto while visiting Canada.
SNMG1 is bound for Canadian waters in order to take part in the Canadian exercise Halcyon RV and the International Fleet Review marking the centennial of the Canadian Navy. Besides St. John's SNMG1 will, during the deployment to Canada, also visit Quebec City and Halifax.
SNMG1 has just crossed the Atlantic after participating in Operation Active Endeavour in the Mediterranean. SNMG1 has earlier this year been deployed off the Horn of Africa for Operation Ocean Shield which is NATO's counter piracy operation. The force will return to do counter piracy in August.
SNMG1 is a multinational integrated maritime force led by a NATO staff with a Danish Commodore as force commander. The force, which is composed of ships from various NATO nations, is permanently available to NATO to perform a wide range of tasks, from participating in exercises to crisis response and real world operational missions.
