Improved weather conditions have enabled searchers to resume a recovery mission to locate the bodies of three young men - ages 18 to 19 - who plunged over Muskrat Falls on Labrador's Churchill River Tuesday evening, May 18.
The RCMP, the area's ground search and rescue team, a helicopter provided by Fire and Emergency Services, other agencies and local volunteers resumed the search this morning.
RCMP Const. Cara Ludtke said that though water levels remain high on the river, blue skies and warmer temperatures have allowed searchers into more areas.
Before the massive search effort was scaled back last weekend, searchers found only a matching pair of running shoes - confirmed as belonging to one of the missing persons - and three small portions of the 18-foot aluminum boat believed used on the night the three went missing.
The three victims were students from the College of the North Atlantic in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. One of the three men was from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, one was from Cartwright and the third was from Charlottetown, in Labrador.
Ludtke said searchers will make a decision at the end of the day whether the search will continue, or be scaled back to be resumed once the water levels drop in the river.
