The Smiling Land Foundation, organizers of the annual Rockin' Big Give in Toronto, have announced the beneficiary of their event this year will be Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador.
Scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Masonic Temple in Toronto, this will be the third year for the Rockin' Big Give - styled as a Newfoundland kitchen party in Toronto. Proceeds from the event are provided to charities in Newfoundland and Labrador.
In 2008, the event raised $150,000 for Daffodil Place. In 2009, the event raised $75,000 for the Stella Burry Foundation and the Vera Perlin Society.
While a full line-up of acts for 2010 has not yet been released, the third annual Rockin' Big Give will have former Chief of the Defence Staff for Canadian Forces, retired Gen. Rick Hillier as its honourary chair, according to a notice from the Smiling Land Foundation.
Hillier's presence is expected by organizers to draw out additional support for Ronald McDonald House.
"We are thrilled to have the support of General Hillier as we focus our efforts on assisting Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador, our 2010 beneficiary," said founding member and chairman of the board of the Smiling Land Foundation, Paul Sparkes. "As a father, I know how much parents worry about the well-being of their children and I am excited that the Smiling Land Foundation is supporting this important pediatric healthcare initiative."
Planned at two storeys, with "14 family suites, a large family kitchen, dining room, laundry facilities and more," the Ronald McDonald House in St. John's is expected to be the first built in Canada in 17 years. The building is slated to be built within a five-minute walk from the Janeway.
"With the province's rural population dispersed over a large geographic area and the central location for paediatric healthcare in St. John's, this new Ronald McDonald House will fulfill a great need," stated board chair for Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador, Gerry Beresford. "Caring for a sick child is never easy, but with the completion of this project, families will have access to a home-away-from-home and extra support that will help them navigate through a very difficult time."
The Ronald McDonald House is scheduled to open in 2011.
