Foster parents and social workers from across Newfoundland and Labrador will be gathering this weekend at the Foster Families Association's annual general meeting and symposium to be held at the Ramada Inn in St. John's.
"Foster parents are an integral component of the child-protection system in our province," Joan Burke, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services, said in a news release.
Those who attend will participate in workshops and share experiences with one another in order to build networks. This year's symposium theme is "Taking Care of Me-Taking Care of You." It will highlight the importance of stress management and the development of coping strategies to deal with often difficult situations.
Burke acknowledged the commitment of the province's foster families at an event which marked the start of the symposium.
Last year the provincial government announced a tremendous increase in foster care rates. The budget included $1.3 million to provide higher rates for foster families, as well as infant, Christmas and initial placement allowances.
"The new Department of Child, Youth and Family Services will build on this investment in order to further advance the foster care system," Burke said.
For information on becoming a foster parent, contact a local Child, Youth and Family Services office or the Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association. Interested members of the public are welcome to attend the annual general meeting being held at the Ramada on Sunday at 9 a.m.
