The RCMP has confirmed a middle-aged man died this morning in a traffic accident on the divided highway just east of Whitbourne.
RCMP Cpl. Blaine Beaumaster said the man was ejected from the vehicle - a single-axle deliver truck (box van) - and died at the scene.
It is not known what caused the accident, though road conditions were wet at the time following heavy rain. The vehicle flipped over causing extensive damage and the contents of the truck scattered into the ditch.
The identity and hometown of the man are not being released at this time. An autopsy is being performed on the victim and next of kin are being notified.
The RCMP is asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call the Whitbourne Detachment at 759-2600. The accident occurred just before 9 a.m. as the vehicle was heading west on the Trans-Canada Highway about 8 kilometres east of Whitbourne.
Beaumaster said a forensic inspection of the vehicle will be carried out to determine if mechanical failures were responsible.
The RCMP Whitbourne, provincial highway enforcement officers and members of the Whitbourne Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.
