It appears the driver of a truck that lost control and flipped on the Trans-Canada Highway near Whitbourne Monday morning was not wearing a seatbelt.
"Police are still going over data to determine if a seatbelt was worn, although it doesn't appear to be the case," RCMP spokesman Sgt. Boyd Merrill stated today in a news release.
Officers were able to speak with witnesses, and indications are the single-axle freight delivery vehicle left the paved portion of the road and flipped after making contact with the gravel shoulder.
"There was no apparent water build-up nor report of animals in the area, as was speculated by some public reports," Merrill added.
The driver was ejected from the vehicle, and died at the scene.
The accident occurred about eight kilometres east of Whitbourne, on the divided highway near Sparke's Farm. The truck was travelling west.
The reconstruction specialist with the RCMP is going over data collected from the scene.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
