An Air Canada flight from Heathrow Airport in London touched down safely in St. John's around 3 p.m. this afternoon after emergency crews were called out for a possible emergency landing.
Bob Nurse, director of emergency response and security with the St. John's International Airport Authority, said debris was found on a runway at Heathrow, indicating evidence of a blown tire, around the same time the Air Canada flight 823 left London.
The emergency procedures in St. John's were precautionary, Nurse said. The plane flew over the airport with landing gear down so ground crews and tower controllers could inspect the tires and landing gear.
When everything appeared OK, the plane was given clearance to land.
