The annual big game licence draw for moose and caribou for the 2010-11 hunting season is now complete, according to the provincial government.
Licence notifications have been mailed out to all successful applicants.
Approximately 73,000 applications were submitted online or by mail for this year's draw. The total number of moose licences available for the season in Newfoundland and Labrador is 28,405. On the island portion of the province, 740 caribou licences are available.
"Once again, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians demonstrated great interest in taking part in the big game hunting season," Environment Minister Charlene Johnson said in a statement.
"We were extremely pleased to see the number of online applications increasing, with more than 52 per cent of hunters applying for a licence via this method."
To ensure licences and tags are received prior to the opening of the big game season, successful applicants are asked to pay licence fees online by July 31. If fees are being paid by mail or in person, payments must be received at the Central Cashier's Office, East Block, Confederation Building, by June 25. Applicants who make payments after these dates may not receive their licences and tags prior to the opening of the big game season.
The government is also reminding hunters that fall black bear licences are also available, and individuals may apply for a licence and make payments online. Payments for black bear licences are subject to the same deadlines as those for big game.
"Hunting and trapping are very important activities for many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians from a recreational, social and cultural perspective," Johnson said. "I wish all participants a successful and safe hunt, and ask them to be aware of all big game regulations at all times."
