Update: Car clocked at high speed before crashing, killing three: RNC

A car that crashed into a utility pole on Freshwater Road in St. John's killing three people on board early this morning was travelling at a high-rate of speed when spotted by a police officer, RNC media relations officer Const. Suzanne FitzGerald told members of the media this afternoon.
FitzGerald said the officer clocked the car travelling east at 147 km/hr on Kenmount Road. The car ran a red light and the officer started a pursuit but notified RNC headquarters he was calling off the chase after the car continued to accelerate.
An 18-year-old male and a 17-year-old female were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. The third occupant of the vehicle, a 35-year-old man, was transported to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The accident occurred about 1:15 a.m. today
Freshwater Road, from Oxen Pond Road to Crosbie Road, remained closed while Newfoundland Power utility crews reinstated power to the area.
FitzGerald noted the Ontario Provincial Police have been called in to conduct an investigation.
