The start of the Labrador shipping season is further delayed, the Department of Transportation and Works announced today.
The MV Sir Robert Bond was most recently scheduled to begin service between Lewisporte, Cartwright and Happy Valley-Goose Bay Friday, however, crews are currently working to correct a problem with the vessel's control system that arose last Thursday.
According to a news release, repairs are being carried out as quickly as possible.
In addition to mechanical problems, current ice conditions are preventing the start of service.
The start of the MV Northern Ranger service is also delayed. An electrical problem discovered during sea trials has delayed the completion of the vessel's refit. A necessary part is expected to arrive from Halifax today.
Once the repair has been completed, the vessel will depart St. John's for Lewisporte and, pending ice conditions, it will pick up freight destined for accessible Labrador communities before resuming service.
The start of the MV Astron service is also delayed due to ice conditions along the North Coast of Labrador.
Transportation and Works officials continue to monitor ice conditions and service will commence along the Labrador Coast as soon as necessary vessel repairs have been completed and ice conditions permit.
