Members of Bay St. George's waste management committee hope a new landfill is the start of a greener future for the region.

With renovations on the St. George's Landfill expected to be completed in early August, newly elected committee chairman Peter Fenwick expects other garbage disposal sites in the area to close down in favour of the new system.

"(It) will be the beginning of the end for the other garbage disposal sites in the Bay St. George area," Fenwick said in a statement.

"But it will also be the start of a modern waste disposal system that will see less waste being thrown away, more recycling and a concerted effort to increase composting.

"These efforts will result in much better stewardship for the most beautiful part of Newfoundland so that residents and visitors alike can enjoy its beauty."

Fenwick went on to say a number of issues need to be settled before the other landfill sites cease operation. Among them is the need to set fees for tipping at the new site and finalizing curbside collection plans for the area. All towns and service districts in the region will be using the landfill, but only Stephenville has indicated it intends to use its current system to collect waste.

The committee hopes to have a suitable system in place within the next several months.

Joining on the new committee are John McPherson from the Bay St. George South Local Service District as vice-chairman, Kippens councillor Barry Noftall as treasurer and Stephenville Crossing councillor Vince Parsons as secretary.
