St. Philip's residents witness aftermath

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has confirmed there was a stabbing in Portugal Cove-St. Philip's Saturday.

Officers say two men are in hospital, but won't confirm any other details.

Residents and visitors in the area are talking though. According to talk in the town, around 3 p.m. one man was stabbed in the abdomen and another man sustained neck injuries.

The incident occurred near St. Philip's Marina and apparently the man who was stabbed ran to a nearby restaurant to get help.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has confirmed there was a stabbing in Portugal Cove-St. Philip's Saturday.

The incident occurred near St. Philip's Marina and apparently the man who was stabbed ran to a nearby restaurant to get help.

Robin Houlston and Grace Moulton, friends who are on vacation here from Medicine Hat, Alta., were in the area Sunday for a second look, after witnessing some of the commotion there Saturday.

Houlston described what he saw.

"I saw the ambulances come. I was just over there when they came," Houlston said, gesturing towards a wooded area between the marina and the road.

Houston said he came with Moulton to Newfoundland to help her sell some houses she owns and both have been staying with Moulton's cousin, just up from the beach. The cousin had apparently been at the scene first Saturday and took Houston to the area to show it to him.

"The bench was full of blood there. She showed me where she found the body. She pointed that out ... the second guy was out here bleeding badly,' he said, pointing to the By The Beach restaurant "and there were people helping him ... The unconscious guy didn't seem to be bleeding in any way. He was just lying there totally unconscious."

Houston saw a couple of "detectives" walking around Sunday morning. He said they asked him if he had seen anything. He said he told them what he witnessed Saturday and showed them a liquor bottle he found under the picnic table, which police removed from the area.
