Emergency personnel were on standby at the St. John's airport Wednesday evening as a Canadian military Aurora aircraft flew in with a malfunctioning engine.
Bob Nurse, the director of emergency response and security for the St. John's Regional Airport Authority, said the plane's No. 1 engine (on the outside left) had a hydraulic failure and was shut down as a precaution. The plane was en route from Iqaluit, Nunavut, to St. John's when the engine failed about an hour before landing.
"As we usually do, when an aircraft has shut down an engine out of a concern that it's not fully operational, we go to standby positions for the aircraft's arrival," said Nurse, who said the plane could have flown for much longer on three engines if it turned out to be necessary.
The plane was greeted in St. John's with fire crews and ambulances on alert, but the plane and the 13 people on board landed safely.
"It's a happy day. Everybody went through the standby procedures training, and the aircraft landed safely at about 6 o'clock local, and everybody went home," said Nurse.
