Andrew James O’Brien is a songwriter/performer who has been garnering significant critical and public notice as one of Newfoundland’s finest new songwriters. Having received funding support from Music Newfoundland and Labrador, the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council and the City of St John’s to record his debut album, “Songs for Searchers,” Andrew and his band, The Searchers have been creating significant buzz since the album’s release in April 2011. Andrew has performed with some of Canada’s finest songwriters and performers from Juno winner Amelia Curran, who is featured on the album, Juno nominee Bahamas and Hey Rosetta! to The Once, Matthew Hornell and Sherman Downey. Since the album release he has been scheduled to perform songwriter’s circles with Sarah Harmer, Basia Bulat and Meaghan Blanchard at the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival and the Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax, respectively. He is also in the throes of planning a fall tour which will see him travel as far as Algonquin National Park in Ontario and all places in between. John Clark, events co-ordinator for the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Council says, “Andrew O’Brien plumbs the depth of human experience and bares his heart, soul and liver in an outpouring of emotion and feeling against a catchy, melodic backdrop of contemporary folk, pop and rock.” Andrew is quickly carving out his place as an important, relevant and talented young songwriter/performer in Newfoundland’s musical fabric.
