Remember a large mural designed by Grand Falls-Windsor artist Michael Pittman unveiled in the Gordon Pinsent Centre for the Arts depicting the Exploits River, and everyone was invited to paint one of the tiles he designed?
That mural later became a part of “Culture Days,” a cross-Canada celebration of arts and culture last year.
This year, Culture Days was back again, running from Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2.
The Central Newfoundland Visual Arts Society (CNVAS) wanted to contribute to that celebration, so members — some of whom had painted tiles for the “River As Source” mural — sat down with their brushes, watercolours and acrylics with small rectangles.
Each rectangle had elements of a picture sketched for members to paint, all with the intention of assembling them into a collective mural.
“We’re not saying what it is, it’s supposed to be a surprise,” joked CNVAS president Alice Dicks.
“However, when it is finished, we are going to put it on our table at the Christmas fair.”
This is the event jointly hosted by the Northcliffe Drama Club, CNVAS and the Exploits Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“Because this is part of Culture Days, we are doing something about culture,” Dicks said.
“We will also be opening our local show in the gallery. We’re also doing this mural as a hands-on project. When it’s all said and done, there will be bids on it.”
Funding raised by CNVAS goes towards purchasing art for the Gwendolyn Cooper Art Gallery at the centre, as well as for the society’s scholarship for post-secondary students planning future studies in the arts.
