Two Newfoundland authors voted in by CBCRadio readers

Based on votes by 10,000 CBCRadio listeners, Canada Reads has announced a

40-title longlist of non-fiction books, which will eventually be whittled down to 10.

This year, the annual literature competition held by the national broadcaster is devoted entirely to memoirs, biographies and literary non-fiction works.

The longlist includes Newfoundland writers Russell Wangersky and Wayne Johnston, and other established authors such as Farley Mowat, Jane Jacobs, Pierre Berton and Margaret MacMillan.

There are also graphic titles, and biographies of Mordecai Richler, Gabrielle Roy and Jane Austen.

Online voting for the 10 top titles is open until midnight Sunday, Oct. 30. The final list will be revealed Nov. 1 on CBC Radio One’s Q by host Jian Ghomeshi.

Then, each of the five Canada Reads panellists (to be announced in November) will choose a title from the Top 10 to defend in the battle of the books in February 2012.
