An anomaly among most musicians in Newfoundland, you won't find songwriter Geoff Whitt playing at your favourite local venue. As a non-performing songwriter, Whitt focuses on writing songs to pitch to other artists, film and television. A Berklee-trained songwriter, his lyric-driven songs are often story based, with strong, memorable melodies. After writing and recording three kids’ projects over a 13-year span, Whitt started writing popular music in September 2010 with almost immediate success. His very first song, “It Hasn’t Always Been This Way” was licenced and aired on Degrassi in August 2011. The song charted at No. 1 last month on an online soft rock channel. Most of Whitts’s recent recordings have been produced by Los Angeles producer and independent mix engineer Jan Stolpe and the two have formed a partnership to write and produce songs for film and TV. With this, and other collaborative agreements in place with producers in Newfoundland, New York, Boston and the U.K., Whitt can now write and produce songs in a number of styles — rock, pop, R ‘n’ B, singer-songwriter, big band/swing, country — all with authentic production. The thing he enjoys even more than songwriting is co-writing. Most of his co-writes, however, have been long-distance collaboration. “Skype is a beautiful thing,” says Whitt, who has written with collaborators in Ontario, New York, Australia and Germany and he is currently writing with Nashville songwriter Steve Leslie.
