Newfoundland recording artists Jim Payne and Fergus O’Byrne, shown snowmobiling in Labrador, have released their first Christmas CD. Entitled "A Lovely Time of Year," it’s the latest addition to a long list of recordings from the two veteran performers. The disc leans heavily on the traditional carol repertoire, but with a twist. Many of what are considered to be well-known carols are sung to uniquely Newfoundland melodies. “Some of these melodies have come down to us through the oral tradition,” O’Byrne says, “so they differ significantly from the melodies that have been written out and published in various carol collections.” The duo has apparently been trying to get around to recording a Christmas album for some time. “We’ve had a lot of requests for one over the years,” Payne says, “but it’s been difficult to get to since our tour schedule keeps us on the road for a good part of the year.” Besides the traditional carols, there are a couple of Christmas standards included on the recording, as well as four selections from Payne’s repertoire of original songs.
