Authors’ visual art going on display

Sometimes stories can be told in images rather than words.

At least two of the province’s best-known authors are discovering this first-hand, and are exhibiting their work as visual artists in St. John’s this summer.

Last weekend, the Leyton Gallery’s summer exhibition opened, with a painting and encaustic pieces by “Alligator” and “February” author Lisa Moore; later this month the Gerald Squires Gallery will open its summer show, including photography by Kenneth J. Harvey.

Harvey, best-selling author of novels “Blackstrap Hawco” and “Reinventing the Rose,” has been branching out from books over the past year or two. He’s become an award-winning filmmaker with shorts such as “I’m 14 and I Hate the World” and “It’s a Girl” to his credit, and has recently been getting recognition for his still photography: online photo sharing site Flickr has chosen several of his photos to be singled out on its homepage. This is the first time Harvey has shown his work in a gallery.

Harvey’s pieces range from landscapes and flowers to photojournalism and self-portraits — one or two of them the result of well-executed flukes.

“I remember cursing when I got home, realizing the error,” Harvey writes of leaving a filter on his lens while shooting lichen clinging to craggy rocks, resulting in a photo with a blue cast. “Sometimes a mistake works out ok.” The photo, “Lichen,” will be on display in the Squires show.

The show will also feature new works by Gerald Squires and George Horan. An opening reception will be held at the gallery, 52 Prescott St., on July 22 from 2-6 p.m., with music by Boyd Chubbs, who’s also a visual artist.
