Mi’kmaq celebrate 17th annual powwow in Conne River

Topics :
Conne River , Canada , North America

The Mi’kmaq people of Conne River joined with many of their aboriginal counterparts from all across Canada on July 6, 7 and 8 in celebrating their 17th annual powwow.

A powwow is held by aboriginal peoples to preserve their rich heritage through dancing, singing, drumming and in getting together to renew old friendships and to make new ones.

Powwows, held each year across North America, are the oldest, most colourful and important of all the aboriginal ceremonies.

Chief Misel Joe said that the annual powwow is very important as it gives the Mi’kmaq at Conne River an opportunity to learn from other groups and to educate mainland aboriginals about Mi’kmaq traditions and beliefs.
