Sherman Downey and The Silver Lining are a party folk band from Newfoundland. With an energetic live show and an obvious love of what they do, they continue to grow a devout fanbase — some even get songs stuck in their heads about muddy jackets, lost kittens and cheap suits. In January, Sherman Downey and The Silver Lining showcased at the Woodford Folk Festival in Australia. They toured between Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney and began to foster relationships with bands and promoters in this new (to them) and exciting market. Upon return to Canada from Australia, the band toured B.C. playing from Prince George to Victoria before heading off to Memphis for an official showcase at the International Folk Alliance. The band has been working on its second CD with the help of funds from its provincial music industry and has plans for a summer release. Between trips to the studio, they’ve showcased at this year’s CMW conference in Toronto as well as the ECMAs in Moncton, N.B. and had a very successful tour within the province on the Arts and Culture Centre circuit. In St. John’s, CBC recorded their show for “The Performance Hour” — soon to be available as a podcast — and have been in talks with CBC regarding the network’s interest in recording the second release for “Concerts on Demand.” The band’s first CD release is currently available in this format. Sherman and the Silver Lining are now on the festival circuit, and are headlining tonight (Aug. 3) at the 36th annual Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival.
