More than 50 artists will converge on the St. John’s harbourfront for a 24-hour marathon of art creation Aug. 18 to kick-off the 13th annual Art Marathon Festival.
The marathon, hosted by the Eastern Edge art gallery, will feature artists working in a variety of mediums, including oils, acrylics, printmaking, and collage with live music, DJs and a beer tent lending to the festival atmosphere.
Among the merry-making, artists will be working on pieces which will be sold in a silent auction at the end of the marathon.
“It’s going to be a really fun night that everyone can feel like they’re part of,” said event co-ordinator Jen Cake.
The festival, which begins with the art marathon, includes art installations around St. John’s, with visiting and local artists also hosting workshops for a variety of ages and abilities, said Cake.
“We want to make sure this is something everyone could get involved in, no matter what age,” she said.
A family barbecue, family art making activities, and a children’s film screening are all aimed at showing kids that making art can be fun.
Among the visiting artists are Jose Luis Torres from Quebec whose project, Jose’s Observatory, will be hosted in Pippy Park at the base of the sliding hill.
From the United States, Noxious Sector will take over George Street for a project they described as a large scale haunting.
Broken City Lab visits from Ontario, and will offer workshops focused around their project “The Public Space Gallery.”
The Art Marathon’s musical guests cover a range of genres, from the pop-rock of The Mudflowers to the grunge of Sea Caves and the neo-folk of East of Empire.
On the electronic front, MssngMrblz and Elling Lien will be performing live.
