Baytown, Chris Kirby, Repartee lead with five nominations each

Danika Drover’s got two words to describe her MusicNL award nomination: “overwhelming” and “unexpected.”

A couple of years ago, she wasn’t even a singer.

Today she’s vying for the 2012 Female Artist of the Year Award, alongside Katie Baggs, Joanna Barker, Dana Parsons and Sherry Ryan, having released her debut record, “Wanderlust,” just last month.

“Having the opportunity to put this album out has been so rewarding in itself, but on top of that, to now be nominated alongside such incredible female artists, it’s mind-blowing,” Drover told The Telegram.

“I have a lot of respect for so many MusicNL members, so knowing that they would think enough of my album to vote for it (provides) me with a huge sense of accomplishment. As someone with very little industry experience, gaining the respect of my peers would mean the most.”

Drover’s musical career began after she won an open mike competition at O’Reilly’s pub on George Street, the grand prize being the opportunity to record a full-length album.

With the help of singer/songwriter Jerry Stamp — a previous multiple MusicNL nominee — she recorded “Wanderlust” at Stagehouse Studios in St. Philip’s last winter.

Drover’s guessing it’s the eclectic nature of the album that may have appealed to the MusicNL judges.

“If they reacted in the same way that other listeners have, I would say that they appreciated the diversity in the style of songs and the positivity of the overall message,” she explained. “It doesn’t hurt that my band is awesome, either.”

This year’s MusicNL award nominees were released Tuesday morning, with Baytown, Chris Kirby at Repartee each receiving five nominations.

All three are vying for the Bell Aliant Entertainer of the Year award as well as the FACTOR Album of the Year award; Baytown for “Two Places,” Kirby for “Wonderizer,” and Repartee with their self-titled debut.

Kirby, of Norris Arm, is a previous two-time MusicNL winner, and took home last year’s Jazz/Blues Artist of the Year award for his solo disc, “Sounds Like Wednesday.”

He’s up for the same award this year. “Wonderizer” was recorded with his band, The Marquee.

“I am thrilled, honoured, humbled,” Kirby said. “MusicNL nominations mean a lot to me because I love this province and our music industry and I am proud to be considered a small part of the evolution and export of Newfoundland and Labrador music.

“I certainly didn’t expect five nominations. I’m surprised and quite thrilled to be in the company I’m in in these categories.”

Dan Bursey agrees.

“Being nominated for a MusicNL award is an honour for me because it’s voted on by your peers. It’s important to know that you are recognized by your peers and that other professionals respect what you are creating,” he said.

Bursey, who’s from Lewisporte, is one of two nominees in the Gospel Artist/Group of the Year category, for his record “Spread Your Love.”

The other is Angelina Richards, for the album, “He is With You.”

“Spread Your Love” is Bursey’s fourth full-length record, and his second children’s album.

His previous project, “God is in my Corner,” earned him the 2011 Gospel Artist of the Year award, as well as East Coast Music Award and Canadian Gospel Music Award nominations.

Other multiple MusicNL award nominees this year include Ian Foster, Evry7th, The Once, the Long Distance Runners and The Dardanelles.

The industry awards — Industry Professional of the Year, Media Person of the Year, Company of the Year, Educator of the Year and Volunteer of the Year — will be presented at a brunch at the Delta Hotel ballroom Oct. 13.

The music awards will be handed out at a gala at the St. John’s Convention Centre Oct. 14.

Tickets for the gala are $30, and are available at the Mile One box office.

This year’s MusicNL week, featuring seminars and networking events for members of the music industry as well as public showcases and a songwriters’ circle, will begin Oct. 8.
