Hello Lori, I have been really interested in biochar since I first read about it in National Geographic some years ago. Until your post, I had not heard anything about whether or not biochar would improve poor, rocky soils so I am really excited about your test. My farm is on an old alluvial plain of granitic cobble and clay/silt. My soil has no nitrogen and no organic matter so I have been interested to learn if biochar would improve fertility in my soil type. Are your soils similar? Our University test sites are all in very clay based soils with minimal rock, so their results have not been very applicable to my site. Can you tell me a little more about your soil composition and your conclusions about how the biochar works in your soils? I have wanted to understand if the biochar simply creates better porosity in heavy clay soils or if it actually holds onto nutrients and makes them more available to the plants. Thank you very much. I would love to read your study if you are planning to publish it. Sincerely, Kathy Noble
