Before Russell Wangersky takes the stage at Tuesday’s Scotiabank Giller Prize gala, he will be introduced by actor Allan Hawco of “Republic of Doyle.”

Wangersky, an award-winning author, columnist and editorial writer, is nominated for his short-story selection “Whirl Away.” He’s The Telegram’s editorial page editor and lives in St. John’s.

 CBC-TV personality and Newfoundlander Rick Mercer will also be a presenter for the splashy literary event, as will Olympic gold medal trampoline gymnast Rosie MacLennan, Hedley lead singer Jacob Hoggard, “Sex and the City” star Kim Cattrall, and opera great Measha Brueggergosman.

CBC Radio’s Jian Ghomeshi will host the Giller bash, which will award $50,000 to the author of the best Canadian novel or short-story collection published in English. It will be broadcast on CBC-TV from Toronto’s Ritz-Carlton hotel.

Other nominees for the prize are Alix Ohlin for “Inside,” Nancy Richler for “The Imposter Bride,” Kim Thuy for “Ru,” and Will Ferguson for “419.”

Jacob Hoggard will sing an adapted version of Hedley’s tune “I Won’t Let You Go (Darling).”

He’ll be accompanied by a dance performance choreographed by Jorden Morris, former principal dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

    Crabby, FYI, he was born in Connecticut but has lived in Canada since the age of three. Attended Acadia University in Wolfville, NS.

    Regardless of where Russell Wangersky was born, I am pleased to see that his talent, effort and hard work as a journalist and author is finally being properly recognized on the national stage and on the national news. I also hear that Mr. Wangersky is a very good volunteer firefighter as well!

    So where will they say he is from?,St. John's or BORN in nova scotia, as they said on national news.
