Joel Plaskett Emergency, Gypsophilia and Vishten were among the acts presented East Coast Music Awards in Halifax Saturday evening.

Some ECMAs are being presented in advance of tonight's award gala at the Cunard Centre, which will close this year's East Coast Music Week.

Joel Plaskett Emergency took the award for Rock Recording of the Year for the album "Scrappy Happiness," while Radio Radio won the award for Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year for "Havre de Grace". "Constellation" by Gypsophilia won the ECMA for World Recording of the Year, Vishten took the Francophone Recording of the Year award for "Mosaik," and Donna and Andy won the award for Children's Recording of the Year for "La vie pour moi."

Derek Charke received the Classical Composition of the Year for "Between the Shore and the Ships," while Helen Pridmore and Wesley Ferriera Sponsored won the award for Classical Recording of the Year for the same record.

While none of Saturday's award winners were Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, our own musicans tore up the stage to a full house for the second night at the Carleton Music Bar and Grill, during the MusicNL showcase. Katie Baggs, Terry Penney, Larry Foley, Duane Andrews and Dwayne Cote, Chris Kirby, Pilot to Bombardier, Repartee and Hear/Say played to a sold-out show that saw police and fire marshalls entering to inspect the capacity.

This afternoon will see Lennie Gallant, Dave Gunning, Irish Mythen, Ian Sherwood, Kim Stockwood, David Myles, Tim Chaisson and J.P. Cormier participate in a songwriters circle at the Delta Halifax before the gala's red carpet event begins at 6:30pm.
