Like the mysterious characters who emerge from the shadows, dust and gunsmoke in the songs on his outlaw country album, Justin Mahoney intends to keep on riding until he gets what’s coming to him.
Hopefully, that something will be continued success for “Murder Ballads and Other Love Songs,” the CD that the Steady Brook native released last year under the pseudonym The Heavy Horses.
The album has already earned Mahoney some recognition within the music industry with an East Coast Music Award nomination for Country Recording of the Year.
He was in Halifax for the 2013 ECMAs earlier this month.
He didn’t win the award, which went to RyLee Madison, but Mahoney did saddle up to play a showcase gig in Halifax.
In fact, he was the proverbial night rider with a choice time slot, playing a set in between a performance by Jimmy Rankin and the presentation of the ECMA category award to Madison at the country music venue.
Now he hopes to harness that good exposure and the new networking contacts he managed to sidle up to in Halifax and wrangle up some more notoriety for The Heavy Horse brand.
He was spurred on this past weekend when he played alongside Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case at The Rockhouse in St. John’s.
“I’ll be having a few get-togethers and meetings to follow up on some of the stuff that I did (while in Halifax),” Mahoney said of the off-stage work he’s putting in to promote his music.
Next up will be booking as many shows as he can to further promote “Murder Ballads and Other Love Songs” and the other tunes in his repertoire for the coming months.
“I’m trying to make a run on a full set of gigs for the summer and the fall,” he said.
He’s also looking to draw on another opportunity that came his way while in Halifax.
Eastlink, a major sponsor of the ECMAs, is planning a television program featuring east coast artists to be broadcast later this year.
“We did an on-camera interview and a live performance after that,” he said.
“It was a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to that coming out, some time in the fall, I believe.”
