Cuba native Tamara Segura has been named the winner of the 4th annual RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award.
Segura came to Canada in 2010, having graduated from film school and already winning awards for her work. She spent a year in St. John’s, seeking political asylum and unable to access funding to make films from either Cuba or Canada, but became eligible for the emerging filmmaker award.
Her winning script, “Before the War,” is a heartfelt story about a family falling apart after the father returns from war.
Administered by the St. John’s International Film Festival, the emerging filmmaker award is named in honour of local filmmaker Michelle Jackson, who passed away suddenly in 2008. As this year’s winner, Segura will receive more than $10,000 in cash and services to complete her short film, which will screen at next year’s film festival. This year’s festival will run in St. John’s Oct. 22-26.
