The first of the 2013 MusicNL awards were handed out in Gander this morning, at the annual Industry Awards Brunch.

MightyPop's Jud Haynes - though not present at the brunch - won two awards: Volunteer of the Year and Industry Professional of the Year. Media Person of the Year went to Tom Power (who was also absent), Music Educator of the Year went to Kathy Conway, and Outstanding Company of the Year went to Fred's Records.

"It's always about you and your music and your creativity and your dedication to your music," Fred's manager Jim Brokenshire told the local musicians and industry professionals gathered for the brunch at Hotel Gander.

The brunch also featured performances by the young winners of this year's Statoil MusicNL NewFound Talent Contests, which were held earlier this week in St. John's and Gander, giving musicians under age 19 the chance to showcase their talents. St. John's winners were Emma Peckford, 15; Joseph Coffin, 13; Justin Martin, 18 and Hannah Banana, 15. Gander winners were Madison Dohaney, 17; Nicholas Sanders, 15; and Jane Soucy, 16.

"What can we say, music is alive and well in Newfoundland and Labrador," MusicNL executive director Denis Parker said of the teenagers, calling them "the heroes of tomorrow."

The rest of the 2013 MusicNL awards will be presented during the gala awards show at the Gander Arts and Culture Centre tomorrow night. The event will stream live online through www.musicnl.ca, starting at 8 p.m.
