“Brevity is the soul of wit,” says CBC Radio’s Ted Blades.

The poster for the Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador’s second annual Postcard Story Contest was unveiled at Rocket Bakery Thursday morning. From left to right are Kelly Mansell, co-owner of Rocket Bakery, Joan Sullivan, CBC Radio host Ted Blades and Alison Dyer, executive director of the alliance.

Blades, along with award-winning writer Lisa Moore, is judging this year’s Postcard Story Contest, presented by the Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador in connection with Rocket Bakery and the Newfoundland Quarterly.

Launched Thursday morning at the bakery, the second annual contest will see the writers’ alliance accepting submissions of original, unpublished stories of 250 words or less that include the word “rocket.” Submissions will be evaluated blindly, authors’ names hidden from the judges.

“Telling a story in that short space is quite a challenge. I can’t wait to read the results,” Blades says.

The contest winner will receive $250 cash and a $100 gift certificate from Rocket Bakery and, along with the second- and third-place winners, will have their piece published in the Newfoundland Quarterly summer issue.

All residents of this province over the age of 19 are eligible to enter the contest. Stories must be in English and not currently submitted to any other publication or contest. Entries should be typed, double-spaced in 12-point font, with a cover page including the author’s name, mailing address, email address, phone number, story title and word count.

If emailed, the entry should be attached in Word or PDF form, with the contact information in the body of the email.

Only one submission is allowed per author, and the deadline to submit is April 25.

Entries can be emailed to wanlcontest@gmail.com with “Postcard Story Contest” in the subject line, or mailed to Postcard Story Contest, Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador, Haymarket Square, 208-233 Duckworth St., St. John’s, NL, A1C 6N1.

“Brevity is the soul of wit,” says CBC Radio’s Ted Blades. No. That was Shakespeare.
