Local pop-punk band RocketRocketShip are far in the lead in the national Bell Media Radio Star contest, vying for prizes that include $10,000 cash, a Les Paul guitar, synthesizer, custom drum kit and 30 hours of studio time.

The band’s single “Here’s to Us” was named as a finalist in the contest, which took submissions from emerging artists across nine markets in Canada. The winner will be chosen by fan voting, and the song is currently winning, with 835 votes as of Wednesday morning.

RocketRocketShip won the MusicNL award for Pop/Rock Group of the Year in 2013, and are currently on a tour of Canadian high schools with the “Live Different” charity. They will showcase at the East Coast Music Awards in Charlottetown next month.

“Here’s to Us,” released by the band last June, was written by former member Jon Pike.

Voting in the Radio Star contest is open online at until March 24.

'Crazy', you're an idiot. Why do NL'ers always post so negative comments. I'm glad I don't live there anymore.
