Forms band with former Bay City Rollers singer and longtime drummer for Billy Joel

Dave Fitzpatrick has got more connections than you can shake a stick at.
In December, the Bay Roberts-based musician brought in renowned rock photographer John Rowlands — a favourite photographer of artists such as David Bowie and Elvis — for a charity event.
Next week, he’ll hit the road with two of his musical idols: former Bay City Rollers singer Duncan Faure and Liberty Devitto, longtime drummer for Billy Joel. Along with fellow Fables founding members Glenn Simmons and Clyde Wiseman, the group, calling themselves Fitz and Them, are touring the province’s Arts and Culture Centres in support of Fitzpatrick’s two new albums.

How did he ever get hooked up with the celebrity musicians?

Through the power of social media.

“I met Liberty seven years ago through MySpace. He sent me a little note saying he loved the drumming on some of my stuff and asked me if I did it,” Fitzpatrick said. “I said, Yes, and the guitars and everything else. He said he would love to work with me sometime, and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.”

When it comes to Faure, Fitzpatrick added him on Facebook after being told by his brother the guy was a great musician.

“I saw his picture and said, Wait, that’s the guy I had on my wall as a kid,” Fitzpatrick said. “We started talking on Facebook and I asked him if I could do one of his songs that had never been released in Canada, ‘Bordentown.’ I ended up doing a few of Duncan’s songs, and we hit it off.”

Fitz and Them recently released two albums: “Picking Up the Pieces” and “Get Together.” Recorded in Colorado, the records also feature Richie Furay of the band Buffalo Springfield and classic rock singer-songwriter Rick Roberts of Firefall.

The provincewide tour will feature music from those albums, Fitzpatrick said, as well as music from The Fables, some Simmons, Fitz and Wiseman tunes, cover songs, and music by the Bay City Rollers and Billy Joel, allowing Faure and Devitto to shine.

“It’s really going to be a treat to play those,” Fitzpatrick said. “To look over and see those guys performing and to know that I’m playing with them is going to be amazing.”

The Fitz and Them “Get Together” tour will begin in Carbonear April 7, and visit Marystown, St. John’s, Clarenville, Grand Falls-Windsor, Gander, Labrador West, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Stephenville and Corner Brook, before ending up in St. Barbe/Plum Point at Thirsty’s April 19. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 the day of the show (including HST and service charge). Tickets are available online at

Hello, Enjoyed your article, just wanted to point out a technical point. Duncan Faure was never the Lead singer in a group 'The Bay City Rollers'. He was in fact the lead singer in a group called 'The Rollers', which is distinct from the former by way of it's complete failure in the music business.

I don't think this original comment has been made by ex-lead singer Les McKeown. It's probably just a "fan" who wouldn't have any idea of what contract Duncan signed and who is hiding behind Les's name. I can't believe that Les would be so unprofessional and spiteful as to make such a petty and ill-informed comment.
