A few weeks ago, the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries launched an exciting new resource for library patrons — the eResource portal.

A partnership between the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries, Memorial University, the College of the North Atlantic and the Department of Education, the portal provides electronic access to information from a variety of newspapers and magazines.  In addition, the portal contains links to trusted websites, all conveniently located in one place. The resources on the portal are free to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador with a public library card. Sign in, click on a subject area and away you go.

Here are just a few examples of what you can find on the portal:

If you’re looking for a good book and wondering what to read next, visit NoveList Plus, where you’ll find lists of author read-alikes, award-winning titles and book discussion guides for readers of all ages.

Need a new snowblower after the (very) long winter? Make sure you get the best value for your money by doing your research first on Consumer Reports, where you’ll find ratings and reviews for thousands of products and services.

Of particular interest to children and parents is the TumbleBooks collection, with material suitable for the youngest child all the way up to teens. Featuring animation and audio narration, TumbleBooks has a great collection of electronic picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, classic literature and  Shakespeare.

You can find magazine and journal articles for your research paper or project in Canadian Reference Centre and MasterFILE Premier.

And for those doing research related to Newfoundland and Labrador, a wealth of information — including articles, maps, photographs and video and sound recordings — can be found through Memorial University’s Digital Archives Initiative.

If you’re thinking about your first career — or a career change — the Career Cruising database is a fun and useful way to find out all about different careers and whether or not they’re right for you. With tools for self-analysis and information on Canadian educational institutions and the programs they offer, Career Cruising is a great place to start your career search. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Explore the portal today by visiting the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries’ website at www.nlpl.ca and clicking on “eResource Portal.”

For further information on the ePortal, please contact your local library.
