The City of St. John’s is looking for a “nexter” for its arts advisory council.
Coun. Sandy Hickman, the committee chairman, says the “nexter” — an adult between 19 and 35 — should be involved in the arts community, with participation in some sort of arts organization being ideal, and have “something to say” about city art policy.

“What we do on our arts advisory committee is we have people from several associations and four or five citizens, one of whom would be the ‘nexter,’ of course,” said Hickman.

“They bounce around ideas, they come up with ideas, and can also give us advice on ideas that the city might have. It’s like all our advisory committees. It’s not the final say of council, of course. It’s a committee that does some of the thinking and provides expertise to council because we don’t huge staffs of people in every discipline, across the city in every department of every walk of life. So we rely on the committees to provide us with advice and ideas and feedback.”

Current arts projects being considered by the committee include outdoor concerts and more murals for the city like the ones on Duckworth Street and the Outer Battery.

“We do have some staff that are helping co-ordinate that, but jeepers, we just don’t have the 20 or 30 or 50 great minds around a table, but if we can get a dozen around a table, then that’s what we want,” he said. “The nexter is a young person who’s involved in the arts community and can provide us with their thoughts and ideas.”

Anyone interested can submit a resume with a cover letter to arts@stjohns.ca by May 7 at 4:30 p.m. More information can be found on the city’s website, stjohns.ca.
