The province’s first western swing band for kids will ofer two shows at the Rocket Room in St. John’s this weekend.

The Swinging Belles — performers Laura Winter and Erin Power, with award-winning guitarist Duane Andrews — are all about getting families out for a dance with some swing country and jazz.

Winter and Power are both primary school teachers by day and musicians by night: as part of country/folk group The Dilettantes, they have recorded three albums for the RPM Challenge and perform regularly at local venues.

Andrews has performed onstage at festivals such as the Newport Folk and Montreal Jazz and is an established composer and producer.

“Laura and Erin ... know first-hand the joy that kids feel when they can boogie to some good-time music, and as parents, Duane and Erin know the importance of enjoying the music that our kids are listening to,” the Swinging Belles said in a news release.

“The show is packed with music, interactive storytelling and dancing, lots of dancing.”

The Swinging Belles are getting ready to release a CD this fall.

This weekend’s family-friendly shows will happen at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $10 in advance, and are available at Fred’s Records.
