N.L. singers/songwriters nominated for Juno awards

Newfoundland singers and songwriters have again made it on the annual Juno Awards nominees list.

The nominees for the 2016 JUNO Awards were announced by The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) at a news conference at The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto Tuesday morning.

The Newfoundland and Labrador nominees are:

Contemporary Roots Album of the Year

• “So Let’s Go,” Alan Doyle, Skinner’s Hill, Universal Power;

• “The Bliss,” Fortunate Ones, Old Farm Pony Outside;

Children's Album

 “More Sheep, Less Sleep,” The Swinging Belles. Independent.

Recording Package of the Year

Duncan Major (Art Director/Designer), Joel Upshall (Photographer) “ELEMENTS” – Long Distance Runners, LDR Independent.

The Juno Awards will be held in Calgary, March 28-April 3.

The Weeknd garnered six nominations including JUNO Fan Choice*, Single of the Year, Album of the Year*, Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.

Close behind with five nods each were Drake and Justin Bieber, both running for JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. Drake also received a nomination for Rap Recording of the Year, while Justin Bieber was also nominated for Pop Album of the Year.

Vying for four categories each, Alessia Cara was nominated for JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.

Shawn Mendes was nominated for JUNO Fan Choice, Album of the Year, Artist for the Year and Pop Album of the Year.

Artists with three nominations each include:

• Buffy Sainte-Marie (Songwriter of the Year, Aboriginal Album of the Year, Contemporary Roots Album of the Year);

• City and Colour (Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Jack Richardson Producer of the Year);

• Tobias Jesso Jr. (Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Adult Alternative Album of the Year),
