Police on the Northern Peninsula are asking motorists to slow down and look out for caribou in the area of Flowers Cove.
Const. Kevin Bowes says there have been two collisions in the area between cars and caribou this weekend and several more in the last couple of weeks.
No one was injured, but the animals had to be destroyed.
He says because of the type of winter the area has had the caribou herds seem to be congregating near the highway to access salt on the roads.
Further, the animals are blending in with their surroundings and travel in herds so when one crosses the road they all do regardless of traffic, Bowes says.
The herds of between 40 and 60 animals are blocking roads between Eddies Cove East and St. Anthony Airport.
Bowes is asking that people be aware of the animals, alert and cautious when driving in the area.

Organizations: St. Anthony Airport

Geographic location: Northern Peninsula, Flowers Cove, Eddies Cove East

Driving up the Northern Peninsula on Thursday past there were three times we had to stop to allow caribou to cross. Once in St. Pauls area, once after danials Harbour and another time in the same general area. Like the report here says, once a few were across the herd were crossing regardless. Fortunately I drive the speed limit and had no incident except trying to catch some pictures.
