The summer festival season is near. As proof, the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Council announced the lineup for the 2008 folk festival Thursday evening.
The festival takes place Aug. 8-10 in Bannerman Park in downtown St. John's.
Among the main stage performers this year are Shanneyganock, Figgy Duff, Graham Wells and Chain Rock, The Idlers, The 8-Track Favourites and The Roger Howse Band.
"We're trying to pack things in there and give people a big variety," says council president Anita Best of this year's lineup.
This year the festival will also incorporate a few new events into the mix, including the "Morning Sessions" which entails traditional singers, storytellers, dancers and instrumentalists carrying out themed performances.
Also new to the festival is "Homemade Jam," an interactive workshop where participants are given the opportunity to sing, dance or play along with various traditional musicians from the main stage lineup.
"People will get the chance to participate. It'll be an unplugged session," explains Best.
The Neil Murray Stage will feature some of Newfoundland's best young talent, she adds.
"We're probably the only (folk festival) in Canada where kids get to perform. One of the mandates of the Folk Arts Council is to encourage the transmission of tradition. We want to pass it on to the next generation because if we don't, who will?"
This year's lineup is a bit shuffled, explains Best, in that the past format of shifting from the more tranquil acts to the upbeat music as each day progresses will be altered.
"We want people in the park for 6:30 p.m.," she explains. "We don't want them to wait 'til 9 p.m."
The Mahers Bahers (pronounced Mars Bars), for example, will kick off the Saturday afternoon session of the festival.
"They're a fabulous, high-energy Newfoundland band," says Best.
Closing out Saturday night are blues act The Roger Howse Band, The Idlers, with their contagious blend of funk and ska, and the 8-Track Favourites, a combination Best says should make for a fun evening.
"If you happen to have a moon or a nice night, people will be dancing," she says.
This year, the evening sessions will begin at 6:15 p.m. on Friday and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, an earlier time than previous years' 7 p.m. starts.
Tickets for the 32nd Annual Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival will go on sale within the next few weeks.
Check the festival's website, www.nlfolk.com, for ticket and event information, including details on the workshops and the full main stage schedule.
