Rose Bowl winners to be named in concerts next week

Into its schedule of performances for 2010, the Carbonear Regional Kiwanis Music Festival has set the stage for beautiful music for four decades now.

"We pride ourselves in having 40 successful years," said Milton Peach, president of the festival board.

About 2,200 entrants will compete for the awards this year, he said.

Formerly known as the Kiwanis Club Music Festival in Carbonear, the annual event changed names as it grew to include more communities.

"We don't only do Carbonear now," said Peach. "We include Trinity, Conception and Placentia bays."

"We started the festival in 1970. Since then, from our best guess and what we have records of, we have put through more than 100,000 students," Peach said.

He said a total of about $25,000 will go to putting off the festival this year, including scholarship awards of $250 and $500.

"We try as much as possible to distribute as much as possible," Peach said.

What is more important, he said, is some of the students who have had their first encounters with performing music at the festival, have gone on to study, play professionally and even teach music.

The Rose Bowl competition for the 40th festival is set for tonight. Winners will be announced at follow-up concerts on March 23 and March 24 at Conception Bay Regional Community Centre.

Tickets for those concerts are available at the door.
