Filmmaker Allison White has been selected the winner of the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award.
The St. John's International Women's Film Festival made the announcement in a Wednesday night news release.
The film award was established in memory of St. John's filmmaker Michelle Jackson, who died suddenly in 2008. It includes $13,500 in cash, but also about $27,500 in various film-related services, such as script editing and equipment rental.
The services provided are enough to cover the creation of a short film, to six minutes in length. White has proposed a film "decoloured," about "a colour-blind man (named Albert) who can see colour only when he is in the presence of his new friend Amber."
The film is to be created by White and screened at the 2010 St. John's International Women's Film Festival.
White graduated from film school at Sheridan College. She has previously worked entry-level positions on "Republic of Doyle," Sherry White's "Crackie" and on programs for Best Boy Productions, the CBC and the National Film Board.
"We're excited to finally launch the RBC Michelle Jackson Emerging Filmmaker Award; this is a prize well worth the wait," stated the women's film festival chair, Noreen Golfman, in the release. "It's the culmination of the efforts of Michelle's friends and our industry partners. The festival is proud to host the award in Michelle's memory. We congratulate Allison as the first recipient of this award and look forward to seeing the film this fall."
According to the information provided by the festival, the award has been made possible by: RBC Foundation, CBC-St. John's, PS Atlantic, Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Association, the law firm Stewart McKelvey, NIFCO, KODAK Canada Inc., Deluxe Toronto, script services-Gail Collins, Powerpost, and the Atlantic Film Festival.
