A nine-year-old boy is dead after drowning in Nain.

Police are still investigating the death, which occurred when the boy and another nine-year-old relative were swimming in a pond used as the town water supply.

So far, police believe the boy went too far from shore and drowned in about 12 feet of water.

Several people started searching the water for the boy, but he was submerged for more than 30 minutes.

He was found by a local man about 25 feet from shore, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The boy was pronounced dead at the clinic.

The boy's name won't be released at the request of his family.

Police and town officials are reminding people that the pond is a "no swimming" area.
