The Herder Memorial Trophy was first presented in 1935 by The Evening Telegram Limited in honor of the hockey-playing Herder family, who founded The Evening Telegram in 1879. The trophy is emblematic of the all-Newfoundland senior A hockey championship.
Both teams have experience competing for the top prize. The Caribous played in the Herder final the last two years, winning the historic trophy in 2012. Clarenville also won the Herder in 2009 and 2010.
The Cataracts played in the 2012 and 2011 finals, winning the hardware in 2011. Grand Falls has 11 Herder championships as the Cataracts and Andcos. The town won the 1953 Herder as the Grand Falls All-Stars.
