MONTREAL - Preparations are in full swing for a possible Quebec election that's widely expected to be called this week.

Premier Jean Charest announced three new candidates today to run for the Liberals in the upcoming campaign.

The announcement is something of a coup for Charest — all three are former members of the Action democratique du Quebec, a party that was absorbed by the upstart Coalition For Quebec's Future.

The new candidates say they didn't want to run for the new party headed by former Parti Quebecois cabinet minister Francois Legault.

Legault has also been busy this weekend and is planning to unveil his party's campaign slogan today.

Rumours have been swirling for weeks that Charest could call an election Aug. 1 for a vote on Sept. 4.
